I live in the northeast and we all have basements. Basements are fantastic storage area and some people actually extend their homes square footage and make the cellar into a livable space. Being that the basement sits below the ground it can be damp and contain moisture. The cellar should be sealed on the outside which will definitely help to keep the space dry but we alot of people live in old houses and this is just not the case. After every rain or snow defrost you will see piles of belongings out by the road when you drive down any city street here in the New England states. The home owners things that were stored in the basement undoubtedly were ruined by water. Dampness and moisture can destroy your stored items and ruin your heirlooms. It happens multiple times a year here. Be careful when you store things in your cellar and always use a dehumidifier. There are many steps you can take to keep water out of your basement.
