When moving from one place to another, it is difficult to find movers that will do exactly what you need. I have moved with professional movers several times so I thought that I would share a few things that I have picked-up over the years.
The first time we moved with professionals was about fifteen years ago. We did not really know anything about the internet then so searching for the net for movers nyc was not an option. We had to go with word of mouth and BBB (Better Business Bureau) ratings for guidance. Now that finding a mover is as easy as typing into a search engine, I still recommend word of mouth and using the local BBB for assistance. There are so many scams out there that knowing someone who can recommend a particular mover is the best way to go. If you do not have someone, do pricing research online and then consult your local BBB for confirmation of their legitimacy. Always pick a mover that has a history of more than just a couple of years. It is common for crooks to set-up new businesses every two or three years.
The second thing I recommend when moving is to pack most everything yourself. Check with your mover for free or discounted boxes and paper. If that seems to high, try a major home improvement store (the orange and white one) for pretty good deals on boxes (always buy the paper from a mover). I said pack most everything yourself because your really breakables you want packers to pack. Unless you spend the huge amount on special boxes and bubble wrap, it is worth it to have someone pack the very fragile things.
A third tip would be to label your boxes with a room number. Give each room or area a designated number. For instance, kitchen boxes would have a number one while the baby’s room boxes have a number nine on them. Then, before the movers arrive, put the numbers on each door/wall that corresponds to the number system you created. Movers love this because they do not have to ask “where does this go?” every time they bring a box in the door. This is something I wished I would have done with the nyc movers because I ended-up having to cart two dozen or so boxes from the basement to various rooms in the new house.
When using professional movers, taking care on who you pick, how much you have them do, and providing them a means of placing the items in the proper location will help insure that your next move will just be a headache rather than a complete nightmare.
